Field Trip: Birmingham’s East Lake Park & Zion Prairie
March 11, 2017 @ 7:00 am - 12:00 pm
Black-crowned Night-Herons, Great Blue Herons, and at least a few winter waterfowl are virtually guaranteed on this March field trip to two “Birdingham” hotspots.
The first of these sites, East Lake Park, is one of the city’s oldest and most-visited public parks, a stop on the Alabama Birding Trails Appalachian-Highlands section, and a Birmingham Audubon Urban Bird Habitat Initiative location. While the park’s highlight is a large, easily viewed central island—home to one of the area’s largest Black-crowned Night-Heron rookeries—birders can also expect to find resident and wintering songbirds along the banks of Village Creek, which runs along through southeastern edge of the park.
The second stop, a short-grass habitat that area birder Scot Duncan has dubbed the “Zion Prairie,” is just a short drive north of East Lake, on property adjacent to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Visitors to this little-known habitat can expect to find numerous sparrow species, Eastern Meadowlarks, and any number of raptors, including American Kestrels and Red-tailed Hawks.
Meetup is at 7 a.m. in the eastern parking lot at East Lake Park (200 84th Street North). Be sure to bring good walking shoes and a variety of outerwear, as Alabama weather conditions can be notoriously changeable this time of year. We hope to see you there!
